Will Work from Home: Earn the Cash--Without the Commute: Tory Johnson, Robyn Freedman Spizman

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
In the 1990s, a few clairvoyant writers zeroed in on Americans’ yearning to work from home—and quite a few corporations took note. A decade later, similar advice is being proffered to women from Johnson and Spizman, two mediagenic executives. What’s the change from a decade ago? First, this is more inspirational than practical; the authors do cover writing business plans, for example, but in outline manner. Individual anecdotes are plentiful, as are action steps at the end of each chapter. Second, it is geared to women who, to be honest, are usually the ones demanding career flexibility. Third, it’s filled with rather basic information, the ABC’s of asking to become a teleworker or a quiz testing homebound readiness. To give the authors their due, there is an important chapter on avoiding scams. Good tips and good words abound, although it’s somewhat surprising that two such accomplished professionals push the same kind of work-at-home occupations for women, such as interior design, instead of helping blaze a trail. –Barbara Jacobs

Escape the cube. Ditch the commute. It’s not just a dream anymore.

Many people already spend 12 hours a day getting to work, working, getting home from work. Here’s some good news: thanks to advances in technology, acceptance of outsourcing, the trend towards corporate flextime, and other factors, working from home is easier than ever.

Good Morning America’s Workplace Contributor Tory Johnson and consumer advocate Robyn Freedman Spizman tell readers exactly how to turn today’s cultural change to their advantage without giving up an income. Specific business plans will teach them how to:
• Take their current position home
• Find a new company whose policies will allow them to work from home
• Reseach a product they believe in, and sell it from home
• Start their own business, doing something they love, for a minimal initial investment

With real-life stories, a step-by-step plan, resource guides, and lists of scams to avoid, this is the book that will help readers finally make the leap––and show them that they don’t have to give up their family, creativity, or peace of mind to earn a decent salary.

"…this book will provide useful advice for working at home–avoiding the online scams being peddled…" –Time Magazine, April 2, 2009

    Review
"Lister and Harnish are careful to point out that working from home is not for everyone. They interviewed scores of folks who work at home, talking about the challenges they face and how they cope with them. My favorite was easily the approach one programmer named Madison takes to make sure her family knows when she’s on the job and has to focus on her work: “To make sure everyone knows when she isn’t available, she wears a tiara when she’s `at work.’”

The Best Home Businesses for People 50+ was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection.

“For those who take the “my way” approach to work life instead of the “bye way,” the Edwards’ new book is a blue print to help boomers bank on a business in the home. It offers information on selecting, starting, running and building a career based on individual needs, talents and ideals specific to the over-50 generation.”

    – Broderick Perkins, DeadlineNews.com

“I sat down to glance and skim through this book and found myself a couple of hours later reading it page by page. The information is presented in a clear no nonsense way that not only reviews many businesses that would allow working seniors (or anybody for that matter) to create a business but gives some great resources and a virtual roadmap on making it a success.”

    From Booklist
Many articles and books have been devoted to the art of home-based business. And some publications even include a few paragraphs or one chapter about the special situation of work-at-home moms. Valuable tips and advice, however, have been missing. To plug the hole, freelance writers Parlapiano and Cobe quite literally cover the complete home front, from figuring out job requirements to planning business growth. Need hints about discouraging kids from telephone interruptions? Confused about child care options and possible expenses? Want to identify a workable schedule that considers children’s and husband’s time? Almost every conceivable question has been anticipated and answered, buttressed by online statistics (what other moms do), individual success stories, and the “mompreneur Hall of Fame” (e.g, Sheryl Leach, creator of the ubiquitous purple dinosaur).
