The Leader in You (Cassette): Dale Carnegie, Stuart Levine, Ross Klavan

    Editorial Reviews

Despite the wealth of technical advances in the 1990s workplace, managing, motivating, and communicating remains a challenge. The Leader in You adapts the simple, time-tested management theories of Dale Carnegie to this high-tech environment with refreshing results. Read in an engaging but direct tone, the tape’s pace is varied with excerpts from recent management studies and anecdotes from contemporary business leaders. It’s a sound introduction to leadership skills for anyone working in the public, private, or nonprofit sector. (Running time: 1.5 hours, one cassette) –Sharon Griggins

    From Publishers Weekly
Essentially an updating of Dale Carnegie’s enormously successful books of the 1930s and ’40s ( How to Win Friends and Influence People has thus far sold 30 million copies), this book adds little new material. The major difference is that this effort is more unabashedly focused on influencing people in order to make money, which is logical since the book is aimed at business people. Carnegie’s rules are reiterated: be euphoric if you can and, if you can’t, at least don’t be negative; respect others and try to make them feel praiseworthy and deserving of recognition; listening is just as important as talking, perhaps more so. Business people are advised that they can be leaders if they realize that the pyramidal structure of the corporation is being replaced by teamwork; and if they set goals and keep them constantly in mind, business people have a good chance of realizing their objectives. Thus, while Levine, CEO of Dale Carnegie, and Crom, a vice-president of the firm, offer little that’s original, one senses that sales will be excellent.

Getting Unstuck: How Dead Ends Become New Paths: Timothy Butler

    Editorial Reviews

    From Publishers Weekly
Butler, a psychotherapist and director of Career Development at Harvard Business School, says it’s the ruts and dead ends in life that can provide motivation for the greatest change-provided you’re willing to dig deep and confront unresolved issues from the past. Though it isn’t an easy process, this self-help proves uncommonly fresh and thought-provoking. Butler’s approach is built around a practical six-step process that he’s used with thousands of corporate executives and students, who provide anecdotes and experiences. The book is divided into three sections: in the first, readers learn how to identify a psychological impasse and open themselves to the possibilities it hides; part two focuses on unearthing passions and interests that have been forgotten or buried; and part three is about “Moving from Impasse to Action,” achieving the ultimate goal of change through a heightened awareness of “the energies and possibilities that are emerging, regardless of their threat to habit, comfort and stereotyped expectations.” In the end, the real challenge may be in winnowing a single path from the wealth of options Butler uncovers.

Living the 7 Habits: Applications & Insights: Stephen R. Covey

    Editorial Reviews

Stephen Covey’s famous 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has been teaching people and organizations how to be more effective since 1989. But how do Covey’s principles translate for real people living their lives? Living the 7 Habits presents more than 70 little stories of people as they meet challenges and practice the seven habits. Some are ordinary slices of life; others are pivotal moments or life changes. A 76-year-old man who had overdrawn his wife’s “emotional bank account” starts making deposits of chores, favors, and special dates until love is rekindled. A woman changes her life after her husband dies of cancer. Children teach parents empathic listening. A banker-turned-minister, cleaning his gun as his pregnant wife naps on the couch, accidentally discharges it, killing his wife and the unborn child, and learns to recover from grief and guilt. Parents learn to hear their teenagers’ anxieties with respect and understanding. A clinical-psychology researcher, moved by statistics that one-third of foster kids never return to their birth parents or get adopted, creates a village for former “unadoptable” children, their new parents, and volunteer “grandparents.” The stories are organized thematically into individual, family, community, education, and workplace–with commentary from Covey following each story. If you practice the seven habits and seek inspiration and a feeling of community, this book will help you find both. –Joan Price
–This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

    From Publishers Weekly
Covey fans and booksellers alike will be delighted by this collection, perfect for June gift-giving occasions and destined for a long life. For 10 years, the author’s famed Seven Habits of Highly Effective People has influenced countless individuals and organizations worldwideAand sold millions of copies. Conceding that the earlier books may have been long on theory and light on practice, Covey and his team culled thousands of testimonials for examples of the principles in action. The resulting collection of more than 75 true stories will satisfy the full range of Covey constituents. Though the storytelling is always first-person, the focus is consistently on the underlying principle, reinforced by Covey’s commentary. Handily arranged by situationAwithin individual, family, community, workplace and educational settingsAand varying in depth and power, the stories offer intriguing and provocative lessons. They are mostly brief and often inspiring, but are by no means simplistic; they readily lend themselves to informal teaching and discussion. Some are dramatic and hard to forget: a woman facing a debilitating disease; a convict finding his mission while in prison. Many instructive stories deal with more routine problems, such as how to handle a sullen teenager sensitively or accommodate the needs of an elderly relative. Longer entries from executives of Shell Oil, Olivet College and Alphagraphics, and about the rejuvenation of South Bend, Ind., will appeal to strategic thinkers. This is a Covey classic. The Magic of Conflict: Turning a Life of Work into a Work of Art: Thomas F. Crum

    Editorial Reviews

    From Publishers Weekly
Crum’s optimistic how-to stresses that conflicts are not games, which have winning or losing as their outcome; a conflict is a dance of energy, and if you embrace it in order to work through it, learning and growth occur naturally. Cofounder of the Windstar Foundation with singer John Denver (who wrote the book’s foreword and supplied its photographs), Crum has adapted the Japanese martial art of aikido to what he calls the Aiki Approach to conflict resolution. Mental exercises for centering, photos of aikido postures and graphs of mindsets accompany this self-help manual. Examples of conflict-solving by business people, artists, politicians and others illustrate key points. Crum’s New Age jargon is annoying (”Accept your correctedness”; “choose to cocreate”). His method seems to consist of equal parts positive thinking and Oriental wisdom, with aikido as the guiding metaphor. Prentice Hall Book Club alternate.

This set of simple techniques, including meditation, breathing exercises, openness, and play–Aiki–leads gently to a reordered state of mind. From overcoming apathy to understanding how conflict doesn’t have to mean contest, Aiki turns mind-body integration principles into powerful tools.

Authentic Conversations: Moving from Manipulation to Truth and Commitment: Jamie Showkeir, Maren Showkeir, Margaret J Wheatley

    Editorial Reviews

    Talk Does Matter!

In this groundbreaking new book, Jamie and Maren Showkeir take something people typically think of as merely functional–ordinary conversation–and show how it can lead to a workforce that is engaged and energized or to one that is alienated and uninspired. All too often workplace conversations create what the authors call parent-child relationships. People hide facts, sugarcoat reality, and claim helplessness to try to control the interaction and get what they want. The Showkeirs demonstrate how we can move to honest and authentic interactions: adult conversations that create increased commitment, true accountability, and improved business performance. They offer examples of parent-child and adult-adult workplace conversations in a variety of settings and provide a hands-on guide, including sample scripts, for dealing with a host of potentially difficult conversations.

    From the Publisher

    Praise for Authentic Conversations

“This is as good as any book I have read about how to change the conversation to change the culture. It frames accountability in a powerful way and moves forward our thinking about how real change occurs. It is clearly and simply written… I highly recommend this book.”
–Peter Block, author of Stewardship, Flawless Consulting, and Community

“I have not been a fan of reading business books with two exceptions–David Whyte’s The Heart Aroused and Peter Block’s The Empowered Manager. I will now add Authentic Conversations to that very small list, and so should you.”
–Lee C. Smith, Founding Chair, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, and President Emeritus, Levi Strauss International

“After thirty-five years working in newspapers and nine more as a `school readiness’ advocate, I wished I had read this book decades ago. It would have helped so much. Its basic theme of honest, respectful conversations is the answer to so much in business and in life.”
–David Lawrence Jr., President, The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, and retired publisher, The Miami Herald

“The Showkeirs have written a book that gives us the tools for conversations that can help us create a shared purpose and the future we hope for. This authentic approach is essential not only for business results but for any conversation that is important to you.”
–Nancy Light, Senior Associate Director of Philanthropy, The Nature Conservancy, Maine Chapter

“This book is for everyone, from the CEO to the everyday employee, who is serious about working in an organization in which every person has a deep personal commitment to the success of the business. The concepts and practical steps outlined in this book are easy to understand and are a genuine source of sustainable competitive advantage…This book offers us hope.”
–Jim Burke, Regional Director of Human Resources, Asia Pacific, Watson Wyatt Worldwide

“If you believe that conversations change the world and if you have a passion for organizations that work, you will want this book. This book has the combination of relevance, inspiration, and actionable steps that I seek in books.”
–John Schuster, Principal, Schuster Kane Alliance and author of The Power of Open-Book Management and Answering Your Call

“This book is about sharing the truth with each other in ways that build effective relationships and improve business results. It is not a fairy tale but an honest, hard-hitting book. And it’s not just for leaders or managers–it is for everyone in your organization. If you want to compete successfully in the world marketplace, you need Authentic Conversations.”
–Dr. Kent M. Keith, CEO, Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership and author of Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments

“I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a book on corporate cultures and leadership. Authentic Conversations gets to the heart of what is really going on in organizations, presents persuasive business reasons for change, and puts forth a proven strategy to get on with unleashing the organization’s buried and dormant core potential. It left me wanting more.”
–Patrick J. Banks, PhD, President, Banks International, LLC

“The Showkeirs’ take on using conversations for cultural transformation is refreshing and eminently logical. They challenge much of the conventional wisdom about managing people. This book teaches us how to intrinsically inspire individuals to choose to succeed.”
–Bob Gremillion, Executive Vice President, Tribune Publishing Company

“The Showkeirs’ new book envisions organizations where employees treat each other as business partners, colleagues, and trusted advisors, allowing the wisdom of the organization to emerge. For leaders ready to share power in order to build an organization that is stronger, more responsive, more flexible, and more focused on serving customers, this book is a field manual for changing cultures. It is a must read.”
–Melvin D. Dowdy, PhD, Executive Director, Center for Organizational Excellence, Bon Secours Richmond Health System

“Authentic Conversations is one of the most important books I’ve read in years. It makes a compelling case for the great benefits–both for people and for organizations–that can come from engaging in true conversation.”
–Larry C. Spears, President and CEO, The Spears Center for Servant-Leadership, Inc.

“Authentic Conversations gives us a chance to renew and revive a lost art and essential foundational element so our society can be viable. Additionally, this book gives us models for how to have conversations for those who have never been exposed to an authentic conversation.”
–Corwin Harper, Senior VP/Area Manager, Kaiser Permanente

Reallionaire: Nine Steps to Becoming Rich from the Inside Out: Farrah Gray, Fran Harris

    Editorial Reviews

    From Publishers Weekly
Just 20 years old, Gray is a self-made millionaire, having founded ventures and made media appearances beginning at ages six and nine respectively. He chronicles and draws lessons from his successes and failures, from his first job selling handmade body lotion to his Los Angeles neighbors to his founding of Farr-Out Foods at 13, his sale of it two years later for over a million dollars and his current philanthropic and developmental projects like running INNERCITY magazine. With the help of freelance writer Harris, Gray presents a persona that is straightforward and confident, if somewhat generic (”Now, I want you to take a real ‘lemon’ from your life and make lemonade with it”), but the tale of his ascent is compelling. Fueled by his desire to help his family, especially his single, workaholic mother, Gray is virtually unstoppable; faced with rejection, he tries something else. It’s that resilience that comes through most clearly, reinforced with chapter-ending “Real Points” and “Reallionaire Exercises.” Despite the familiar gimmicks, the real parts of Gray’s experience come through, making this a sound book for anyone seriously interested in getting ahead on his or her own terms.
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    From Booklist
Nineteen-year-old Gray grew up in the projects in Chicago and formed his first business organization at age 7, inspired by his mother’s will and determination. By age 15, he had developed his own food company for kids, Farr-Out Foods, which he sold for $1.5 million. He has lived in Japan, England, New York, and Las Vegas; hosted the celebrity TV show Backstage Live; and is in high demand as a public speaker. It may be hard to believe that sound business advice can come from a teenager, but Farrah Gray is no ordinary kid. Although the book is punctuated with what he calls “Real Points” for success and exercises for things like building a great team and seizing opportunities, the real inspiration is his personal story, which speaks strongly of the importance of mentoring to young people and sends the message that you should never underestimate anyone, especially yourself. Farrah is a young man of true character and integrity, and we surely haven’t heard the last of him. David Siegfried
