Leaders Who Make a Difference: Essential Strategies for Meeting the Nonprofit Challenge (A Jossey Bass title): Burt Nanus, Stephen M. Dobbs

    From Booklist
Few books have addressed the topic of leadership–as opposed to management–in the nonprofit sector. Nanus is already known for his work on leadership, and with leadership guru Warren Bennis, he coauthored Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge (1985), and he wrote Visionary Leadership: Creating a Compelling Sense of Direction for Your Organization (1992). Dobbs was president of the $800 million Marin Community Foundation when he and Nanus met at a conference of the Larger Community Foundations Group in 1997 and mutually acknowledged the lack of material on nonprofit leadership. As a result, they collaborated on this book, which defines leadership and identifies its qualities and explores the leader’s roles as a visionary, strategist, change agent, coach, politician, and campaigner. The authors conclude with an examination of the issue of accountability and the question of how results are measured in nonprofit organizations. Each of the 11 chapters begins with a profile of someone who has successfully exemplified nonprofit leadership. David Rouse

    Review
“Nanus and Dobbs have written a seminal book about a long-neglected and key area of American life: the leadership of not-for-profits. The examples and concepts, written in a marvelously down-to-earth and lucid manner, will, I promise, double–at the very least–the effectiveness of these increasingly important institutions. It’s a first and should be read by all those concerned about not-for-profits: board members most especially, but volunteers, executives, benefactors, and academics as well.” (Warren Bennis, University Professor, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, and coauthor of Organizing Genius)

“These authors have made a remarkable contribution to social sector nonprofit leadership. It’s a valuable resource by two great authorities on a critical need.” (Frances Hesselbein, chairman of the board, The Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management)

“This book is grounded in relevant theory and in practical experience. It is clear, comprehensive, and convincing. I’d recommAnd it to anyone who has entered the nonprofit arena.” (Howard Gardner, professor of cognition and education and adjunct professor of psychology, Harvard University, and author of Leading Minds: An Anatomy of Leadership)

“Leaders Who Make a Difference captures the essence of nonprofit leadership in a clear and comprehensive approach. Nanus and Dobbs have shown nonprofit leaders the way to organization building, strengthening relationships that effect change, and most importantly, enable the nonprofit to make a vital difference.” (Eileen W. Goldblatt, president and chief executive officer, “I Have a Dream” Foundation)

“Leaders of nonprofit organizations will find no better book to understand their leadership. This will be a text for students, a guide for practitioners, and a reminder for experienced leaders. The authors combine insightful theory with case studies of some of the finest nonprofit leaders today. A winning combination.” (Lovett H. Weems Jr., president, Saint Paul School of Theology, and author of Church Leadership)

“If there’s one thing that today’s nonprofit sector needs more than anything else, it’s leadership. In Leaders Who Make a Difference, Burt Nanus and Stephen Dobbs illustrate the qualities that do ‘make a difference’ by telling real-life stories of exceptional nonprofit leaders–few of them household names–and examining the lessons these men and women learned the hard way.” (Dorothy S. Ridings, president and CEO, Council on Foundations)

“This well researched book is written to help current CEOs, as well as to develop and motivate individuals now emerging from all segments of our society to lead with confidence and competence into and through the next century.” (Clark A. Blasdell, president and CEO, Northbay Ecumenical Homes)

As board member or trustee often you receive little or no instruction as to your role and responsibilities. Your lack of knowledge can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and ineffectiveness. That is, until now.Welcome to the Board is the first book of its kind written with you, the board member, as the focus. If you are a prospective or an active board member, Fisher Howe’s book provides you with expert guidance and basic nuts-and-bolts information about board membership. He details the seven key responsibilities of a nonprofit board member–including how to go about the process of approving the mission, assisting in long-range planning, participating in fundraising, and selecting and evaluating a chief executive. Additionally, Howe dispels the commonly believed notion that running a nonprofit organization is the same as running a business.Drawing on a lifetime of experience on nonprofit boards, the author describes how you, the individual board member, can become active in the various aspects of board governance–evaluating the board’s composition, recruiting new members, appointing officers, and participating in meetings–to help your board achieve maximum effectiveness. And he outlines what you have the right to expect from the organization you are serving. The book also explores the leadership role each board member must assume if their organization is to excel. Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations: Theory and Cases: Sharon M. Oster

    Review

“Sharon Oster’s book provides some of the important theory necessary to successfully manage a nonprofit. Her thoughtful analysis of the marketplace is the kind of information that is commonly available in the for-profit sector, but has not been developed for the nonprofit sector–a real contribution.”–Allen Grossman, President, Outward Bound
“Provides a well-written, helpful guide to management issues written by an economist familiar with strategic planning concerns in proprietary business….An overview of issues and guide wither for practicing managers or for graduate courses on strategic management in nonprofits.”–Academy of Management Review
“Framed with an awareness of the challenges of teaching future executives, Professor Oster’s book is a valuable contribution to those working on the front lines of management education.”–Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Quarterly

Nonprofit organizations in the U.S. earn more than $100 billion annually, and number over a million different organizations. They face increasing competition for donor’s dollars and many of the issues they confront are similar to those confronted by for-profit organizations.
Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations applies powerful concepts of strategic management developed originally in the for-profit sector to the management of nonprofits. It describes the preparation of a strategic plan consistent with the resources available; it analyzes the operational tasks in executing the plan; and describes the ways in which nonprofits need to change in order to remain competitive. The book draws clear distinctions between the different challenges encountered by nonprofits operating in different industries.

–Helmut Anheier, professor, Public Policy School, University of California Los Angeles, and Centennial Professor, London School of Economics

“Managing at the Leading Edge is a terrific resource for all those who care about the performance of nonprofit organizations, from current nonprofit staff and board members to students who will be tomorrow’s nonprofit leaders.”

“From building organizational capacity to creating strategic alliances, Hudson highlights numerous best practices among leading nonprofit organizations.”
–John H. Graham IV, chief executive officer, American Diabetes Association

In Managing at the Leading Edge, United Kingdom’s nonprofit expert Mike Hudson (a modern-day Alexis de Tocqueville) offers an outsider-looking-in guide to the management and governance of nonprofits in the United States. In this important book, he tackles three major questions: What are the leading-edge approaches to managing nonprofit organizations? What should managers and board members be doing differently to enhance the performance of their organizations? How can the impact of the nonprofit sector be significantly increased? Basing his interviews on face-to-face interviews with leading nonprofit CEOs, consultants, academics, and senior managers, Hudson shows what does and does not work in nonprofit organizations. He then distills the best practices from these organizations into practical advice and guidance.  Managing at the Leading Edge presents Hudson’s thought-provoking, proven-in-practice agenda and shows nonprofit leaders how to:

    • Build capacity within their organizations
    • Manage organizational performance
    • Create strategic alliances, both within and outside the nonprofit sector
    • Make the most of changing patterns of funding
    • Develop effective, mission-focused leadership
    • Strengthen governance and board performance
